WEST Berkshire-based businessman, Lee Farmer, is leading an expedition up the highest mountain in the Western and Southern Hemisphere at the end of the month. He will depart between Christmas and New Year for Argentina, and a four-week expedition which will see him lead a group of six climbers up the 22,840ft Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America. This is the first time Lee has led an expedition. An experienced mountaineer, he has been advising the group about training and the clothing they will need to take, and will also be providing them with some of the equipment they will need to survive a mountain which claims the lives of many climbers who attempt the summit. His expedition is part of his mission to conquer the highest peaks in all seven continents. A year ago he summitted Vinson Massif during a chilly trip to Antarctica, and since then he has topped Kosciusko in Australia. “As a result of my successful trips last year and this, I have been in touch with a number of climbers looking Although some routes to Aconcagua’s summit are relatively non-technical, it has a high mountain death toll Lee Farmer for an expedition leader, which is a very exciting development," he said. "Since qualifying as a mountain leader, I am looking to lead more expeditions. “Whilst all my companions will be bringing a list of clothing and equipment, it is up to me to provide them with the extras which will ensure their safety as they climb the mountain, and to steer the right path. “Although some routes to Aconcagua’s summit are relatively non-technical, it has a high mountain death toll. "Many climbers tend to move too swiftly with little respect for the elevation or the weather, which can very quickly become severe.” Aconcagua is a gigantic mass of rock which dominates the skyline west of Santiago, Chile’s capital city, and is visible from the Pacific coast 100 miles away. Lee is taking a winter break from his business as a land agent for Faversham Brooke Ltd, which is based near Newbury, to go on the trip.
